Exploring one of Coromandel's gems by Jamie Gallant

For a region of New Zealand best known for its beautiful beaches, the Coromandel sure has some magnificent peaks. Case and point - the Pinnacles in the Coromandel Forest Park. Setting off at 5:30am from Auckland, my wife and I travelled two hours east, zig-zagging up pristine rivers and through dense forest only starting to slip out of its morning blanket of fog.

As we climbed through the forest and along the ridge line the weather continued to clear and we were left with some stunning views. Looking out towards the coast, soaked in the sunshine, it was easy to forget for a moment that it was still the dead of winter.

Interested in visiting the Pinnacles? It's an easy 2hr drive from Auckland and can be hiked in a day (6-8hrs) or better yet you can overnight in the recently renovated hut just an hour below the summit. Visit DoC's website for more details on this hike and others in the area here
